Summer Event Roundup

We’ve had an awesome summer of events here at La Playa books!

We thought we’d share a bit about what we’ve been up to over the past couple of months in this summer’s event roundup:

Colorado Rare Book School

Store manager Amy spent a week in the mountains at the Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar (CABS) in Colorado Springs.

Beginning at the crack of dawn, Amy attended lectures on all aspects of the book business from proper cataloging techniques to book buying and research strategies.

Amy had the opportunity to see and handle some amazing rare books as well as learn from some of the most knowledgeable minds in the book business.

It was an action-packed week filled with book love!

Indies Introduce

Bookseller and book club leader Mimi has been selected to participate in the Winter/Spring 2020 Indies Introduce panel!

Indies Introduce is a nationwide program developed in 2013 by the American Booksellers Association to identify and promote top debut titles publishing in the US.

Twice a year (Winter/Spring and Summer/Fall), panels of independent booksellers from across the nation deliberate and choose their top ten adult and top ten kids’ debuts from dozens of titles submitted by publishers.

Mimi says, “It’s a risk for publishers to invest in debut authors because they don’t have a track record yet, so the endorsement of our panel can be used for marketing to make emerging authors more successful. To potentially be reading the next big author months before their books are released, to be enabling readers to sample new talent, to discuss books with 8 other booksellers around the country and whittle our list of 50 books to our favorite 10 over the course of 10 weeks… it’s a serious commitment and a lot of reading, but it’s a labor of love. I’m looking forward to sharing my favorites with our customers and book club members when the books are released to the public in 2020!”

The San Diego Festival of Books

The Third Annual Union-Tribune Festival of Books was a smashing success!

Over 20,000 attendees came out throughout the course of the day to celebrate all things bookish.

A few images from the event…

La Playa hosted 5 different author signings, including Dr. Edith Eger, a local psychologist, holocaust survivor, and author of the New York Times bestselling memoir, The Choice.

As the summer comes to a close, we are resting up and getting ready for the fall. We are specifically excited about Rare Books LAX, an antiquarian book fair, happening October 5-6 in Marina del Rey! You’ll find us in booth #804. Stay tuned for more exciting details in the days to come.

Until then, happy reading!
