Last weekend La Playa Books had the honor of hosting poet Joan Gannij for a reading of some of her work.
Wine and cheese in hand, audience members were regaled by poems that ranged from the thoughtful and warm to outright humorous.
Gannij, originally from San Diego but currently residing in Amsterdam, infused her poems with the sights and cultures she has engaged through her travels, summing up her experiences by painting verbal images in her poems.
“Poetry is vulnerable, it’s truth,” Gannij says of her work, “when you tell the truth, you’re vulnerable. Words have an integrity.”
As pleased as La Playa Books was to host the poet, Gannij was also grateful for the bookstore, stating, “Writers need readers and readers need bookstores. The bookstore experience is intimate, magical. You never know what’s going to happen when you walk through the doors.”
