La Playa Books and Jane Smiley at PLNU’s Writer’s Symposium

Point Loma Nazarene University’s Writer’s Symposium by the Sea is in full swing, and Tuesday night Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley gave an interview with Dr. Dean Nelson to a captive audience.

La Playa books was present in the lobby selling Jane Smiley’s books and facilitating an after-interview book signing. Many audience members went home with shiny, freshly signed books, eager to immerse themselves in the author’s stories after the night’s stimulating discussion.

Smiley’s career as a writer has led her in and out of a variety of genres including essays, novels, epic sagas, short stories, and novellas. Her work, A Thousand Acres is a re-telling of William Shakespeare’s King Lear, and won her the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1992.

Discussing questions on her writing process, inspirations, development as a writer, family history, and advice to aspiring writers, Smiley’s interview was entertaining, informative, and thought-provoking.

After the talk, a VIP reception with refreshments was held for donors to the program, invited students and La Playa Books’ raffle winners. They mingled with the author, took pictures, and picked her brain about all things literary. La Playa Books is looking forward to continuing their partnership with PLNU at next year’s Writer’s Symposium by the Sea. The yearly program is a wonderful part of our Point Loma Village life!
